The film tells the story of the communal memory of killings that took place after World War II in the Dębrzyna forest in south-east Poland. It was a time when many people were returning from far-flung corners of the world. They had no idea that they might become victims of the attacks being perpetrated by the marauding bandits who had overrun the area. The returnees were hurled from trains, robbed and murdered. It was as if they had joined the numbers of those killed during the war. The residents of the nearby villages knew what was going on in the forest, but they never intervened because, as they themselves say, they were “living in fear”.

Byli wszędzie, starając się pozostać niewidzialnymi. Filmowali z ukrycia w restauracjach, na ulicy, w sklepach. Podsłuchiwali rozmowy telefoniczne. Nagrywali spotkania kochanków w hotelu. Rejestrowali przesłuchania, podczas których szantażując, łamali przesłuchiwanego i zmuszali do współpracy. „Zwyczajny kraj" to film „found footage", oparty na materiałach nagranych przez milicjantów oraz oficerów polskich służb bezpieczeństwa, którzy w niecodzienny sposób zarejestrowali portret komunistycznej Polski.
Controlled conversations, recording with hidden cameras, dirty records of interrogations and recruitment attempts as well as video tutorials for the officers of the security service – all of these materials are employed to portray the monitored life in Poland under communism. Sometimes grotesque, this picture is underpinned by horror, escalating intuitively with every minute. The dramatic culmination is when the Big Brother is not just watching but violating the intimacy of an ordinary citizen. Before us, there is a terrifying communist panopticon which keeps spying on and recording itself.

Bohater chce na własnej skórze poczuć czym w dzisiejszych czasach jest patriotyzm? Czym dla Polaków jest niepodległość? Wojtek dochodzi do wniosków, które wielu z nas – choć widzi – często nie dostrzega. Święto Odzyskania Niepodległości od wielu lat zamiast łączyć, dzieli Polaków. Jeśli chcesz wyjść na ulicę i świętować dzień 11 listopada, musisz dokonać wyboru: w którym marszu pójdziesz? Wojtek odziera pochód z tego co widać. Czy w tłumie tysięcy rodaków uda mu się poczuć niepodległość?
A blind man – Wojtek – for the first time in his life, participates in the nationalist march celebrating Independence Day, in Poland. On his journey, he meets various participants of the march. He wants to experience it firsthand, and get a sense of what independence feels like. Wojtek comes to his own conclusions, and - despite his total loss of vision - sees things others often fail to notice. In the last few years, Independence Day - instead of uniting - divides Polish society. If you want to walk through the streets and celebrate the 11th of November, you need to make a choice: which march will you participate in?
