Czy to muzyka, w której liczy się przede wszystkim rytm? Film idzie głębiej. Funk stał się ścieżką dźwiękową końca lat 60., gdy Afroamerykanie coraz odważniej i wyraźniej wyrażali swoją tożsamość. W pełnym energii filmie oglądamy olśniewające występy artystów takich, jak James Brown, Sly & the Family Stone, Parliament Funkadelic, Labelle, Fela Kuti, a także twórców, którzy pojawili się później. Interwoven are interviews with contemporary musicians and funk ambassadors, including Questlove, Prince Paul, and David Byrne, who explore the extensive constellation of funk – from postwar politics, sociology, and science to the roots of legendary rhythms. The film also examines funk from the perspectives of religion, geography, and music theory.
