„Syn Szawła” powstał z głębokiej potrzeby autentyczności, a drobiazgowa dokumentacja i produkcja zajęły twórcom pięć lat.
László Nemes's Oscar-winning feature debut breaks away from the conventional narrative clichés typical of Holocaust dramas. The filmmaker abandons the epic scale that creates the illusion that we can comprehend the sheer magnitude of this crime. Instead, Nemes's work is defined by maximum realism and the perspective of an individual witnessing fragments of hell. The premiere of the director's latest film, Budapest 1956, will also be featured in this year's festival program.
The year is 1944 at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi death camp. We follow 48 hours in the life of Saul Ausländer, a member of the Sonderkommando—a unit of Jewish prisoners forced to assist the Nazis in the massive machinery of extermination—shortly before the outbreak of the revolt. In a reality impossible to comprehend, in a situation with no chance of survival, Saul attempts to salvage what remains within him of the human being he once was. Son of Saul was born from a deep need for authenticity, with meticulous research and production taking the creators five years. Perhaps that is why Claude Lanzmann—creator of the legendary documentary Shoah and a fierce opponent of cinematic dramatizations of the Holocaust—approached Nemes after the screening and thanked him for the film.
